Teaching Tolerance was initiated in 1991 by the Southern Poverty Law Center, as a response to the rising level of intolerance and racial crimes among youth. The main goal is to support teachers in promoting respect for diversity, not only in the classroom. The website contains information about teaching programs encouraging tolerance and combating prejudice, ready-to-use syllabi, and descriptions of actions implemented in various parts of the United States. The most interesting initiatives are described on the site, and in Teaching Tolerance magazine, published twice a year. It also includes current events from American press related to tolerance and combating prejudice. |

yes, the site contains separate sections for teachers, parents (tolerance at home) and children. The children’s site, with its colorful and fun graphic design, offers interactive games which help children understand terms and instances of intolerance. Teaching Tolerance creates and distributes free materials and lesson plans about combating prejudice at various levels of teaching ("Expand Your Resources"). They include high-quality videos with scripts, textbooks and posters. A forum is active on the web page, allowing exchange of experiences and lesson ideas. A search engine extends the research possibilities. |
