The Borderland Foundation was created in May 1990. In January 1991, the governor of Suwalki Province established the "Borderland of Arts, Cultures and Nations" Centre, located in Sejny. Some of the Borderland activities occur continuously, on a daily basis: the Documentation Center of Borderland Cultures, Heritage Class, Sejny Theatre, Klezmer Band, Papuciarnia Cafe, and Borderland Publishing. Other activities are of cyclical character, taking place once or a few times a year: Memory of Ancient Time, Cultural Heritage Class, Borderland School, Sejnian Chronicles, Central European Forum of Culture (with the participation of European intellectuals), Open Regions of Central and Eastern Europe (presentations of multicultural regions of Central and Eastern Europe), Camera Pro Minoritate (documentary film meeting) and the Borderlander.
The Foundation is especially concerned with education, striving to make it an essential aspect of cultural activity. The Documentation Center of Borderland Cultures publishes the periodical Krasnogruda, as well as books in a series called "Biblioteka Krasnogrudy" (Krasnogruda Library). The Borderland Foundation organizes an educational program for high school youth, which aims to deepen knowledge of the Suwalki region, with particular focus on its religious and national diversity.
